De auteurspresentatie van Prudens van Duyse en de affaire Willem Tell. Een reconstructie.

Samenvatting

Na de onafhankelijkheid van België in 1830 kwam er in Vlaanderen een nieuwe generatie auteurs op, die zich tot grote culturele, politieke en poëticale verschuivingen moest zien te verhouden. In deze periode publiceerde Prudens van Duyse een toneelstuk Willem Tell, waarna de dichter door zijn collega’s van plagiaat werd eschuldigd. De kwestie groeide uit tot een affaire die in de pers werd uitgevochten. Literatoren als Ferdinand August Snellaert, Frans Rens en Prudens van Duyse zelf grepen deze affaire aan om hun poëticale standpunten uiteen te zetten en zich ten opzichte van elkaar te profileren. In dit artikel wordt de auteurspresentatie van Prudens van Duyse onder de loep genomen en de vraag is vervolgens hoe de zelfpresentatie van Van Duyse zich verhoudt tot het auteursbeeld dat zijn tegenstanders van hem creëerden.

Abstract 

After the independence of Belgium in 1830, a new generation of Flemish authors emerged, who had to relate to major cultural, political and poetic shifts. During this period the poet Prudens van Duyse published a play called Willem Tell, after which his colleagues accused him of plagiarism. The accusations grew into an affair that was fought out in the press. Authors such as Ferdinand August Snellaert, Frans Rens and Prudens van Duyse himself used this affair to explain their poetic points of view and to profile themselves in relation to each other. In this article is examined how the self-presentation of Van Duyse relates to the author’s image that his opponents create of him.
